Vellage

Vellage is a small nature reserve in the Lower Saxon district of Leer, in northwestern Germany. Covering approximately 8.4 hectares near the city of Weener and northwest of Papenburg, the reserve protects a cluster of inland freshwater ponds, surrounding woodlands, and small patches of grassland close to the Ems river. The protected area is divided into two parcels, together forming a compact wetland and floodplain habitat mosaic. It sits just inside the Ems dike, separated from the larger neighboring "Emsauen zwischen Herbrum und Vellage" reserve by the dike itself, and forms part of the broader Ems FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) site designated under the European Habitats Directive. Although small in size, Vellage is notable for its richness in aquatic and wetland habitats, its old-growth and deadwood-rich alder and willow woodlands, and its importance for native amphibians, dragonflies, waterbirds, and fish. The reserve has been formally protected since June 2018 and is administered by the Landkreis Leer as the responsible nature conservation authority.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
