Waitawa Regional Park

Waitawa Regional Park is a regional park on the western shoreline of the Firth of Thames coast on the Tāmaki Strait, east of Auckland on New Zealand's North Island. It lies within the Franklin local board area of the Auckland Region, near the small coastal settlement of Kawakawa Bay and the inland locality of Clevedon, roughly 50 kilometres from central Auckland. Unlike many traditional regional parks that prioritize wilderness preservation and passive enjoyment of nature, Waitawa was developed from the start as an active recreation destination. Its coastal frontage, open grassy terrain, and network of tracks support mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking, and disc golf, and the park is integrated into the broader Auckland regional parks network managed by Auckland Council. The park also carries an unusual industrial past. Before it was purchased for public use, the land hosted a dynamite factory operated by Orica Explosives. Some of that legacy remains visible today in the form of an old commercial wharf and an ablutions building, giving the park a distinctive character that contrasts with its present-day role as a recreation-focused coastal green space.
