Werrahänge von Frankenroda bis Falken

The Werrahänge von Frankenroda bis Falken is a protected landscape along the middle course of the Werra river in the northwestern Thuringian district of Wartburgkreis. Designated as a Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site within the European Natura 2000 network, the area covers roughly 569 hectares of steep valley slopes between the village of Frankenroda and the settlement of Falken, near the town of Treffurt and the border with Hesse. Its defining character comes from the way the Werra has cut through the Muschelkalk (shell limestone) rim of the Thuringian Basin, producing a narrow, canyon-like valley with tight meanders, steep river-cut slopes, and exposed rock faces. The protected area combines large tracts of near-natural beech and mixed forest with smaller, highly valuable open habitats, including dry and semi-dry grasslands, juniper heath, species-rich meadows, and rocky limestone outcrops that harbor specialized flora such as orchids. The site has both national and European conservation significance. It lies fully within the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park and incorporates the older Probsteizella Nature Reserve, and it is recognized for its rich bat fauna, threatened butterfly and orchid species, and a small tree species endemic to the Middle Werra region. Together, these qualities make the Werrahänge an important link in the network of protected habitats along the central Werra valley.
