Wulmstorfer Heide mit Bornberg

Wulmstorfer Heide mit Bornberg is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the municipality of Neu Wulmstorf in the Harburg district of Lower Saxony, in northern Germany. It lies immediately southeast of Neu Wulmstorf, right at the state border with Hamburg, and covers roughly 272 hectares of a former military training area in the northern Harburger Berge. The protected landscape is a mosaic of dry heath, near-natural broadleaf woodland, and wet biotopes including moist heath and moor forests, sitting at the western edge of the broader Elbe glacial valley (Urstromtal). The reserve was officially designated on 1 July 2024 under the identifier NSG LÜ 379 and is administered by the Niedersächsischer Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz (NLWKN). The reserve's defining identity is its unusual combination of habitats in close proximity. Open heathland dominated by heather species is interspersed with nutrient-poor grasslands, while the woodland sections include old oak and beech stands rich in dead wood and old growth. Together with the adjacent Fischbeker Heide on the Hamburg side, the area forms part of a larger biotope network along the Lower Saxon and Hamburg state boundary, making it a meaningful addition to the regional system of protected open and semi-open landscapes. Ecologically, the area stands out for supporting reptile and amphibian communities that depend on the sandy, sun-exposed conditions typical of former training grounds, as well as for breeding bird species of open heath and woodland edge. Management combines traditional heath grazing and scrub removal with active restoration, including the removal of less ecologically valuable conifer plantations and the deliberate clearing of some woodland edges to expand open heath surfaces.
