Yanesha Communal Reserve

The Yanesha Communal Reserve is a protected area in the Palcazu District of Oxapampa Province in central Peru, set within the basin of the Palcazu River. Created by law in 1988, it functions as a communal reserve under IUCN category VI, a designation aimed at conserving both wild fauna and the traditional homeland of the Yanesha indigenous people who live within its boundaries. The reserve lies in a transition zone where the Andean foothills give way to the Amazon basin, giving it a humid, forested landscape characterized by rivers, tropical vegetation, and rich biodiversity. Its purpose extends beyond ecological protection: it formally recognizes the cultural and territorial rights of the Yanesha people while aiming to keep the surrounding ecosystems intact. Today the Yanesha Communal Reserve is recognized as an important example of combining indigenous land tenure with conservation in Peru. It supports hunting, fishing, and gathering traditions of its inhabitants while also sheltering populations of neotropical mammals, birds, and freshwater fish that are characteristic of the northeastern Peruvian rainforest.
