Andringitra National Park

Andringitra National Park is a protected highland area in the Haute Matsiatra region of central-southern Madagascar, approximately 47 kilometres south of the town of Ambalavao. The park encompasses a dramatic granite mountain massif that rises from surrounding plains, protecting one of the island's most ecologically significant and geographically diverse landscapes. Established as a national park in 1999 after decades as a strict nature reserve dating to 1927, Andringitra safeguards critical sections of the Rainforests of the Atsinanana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2007. The park spans altitudes from 700 metres to 2,658 metres at Imarivolanitra, formerly known as Pic Boby, which stands as Madagascar's second-highest mountain. This remarkable elevation range, combined with varied rainfall patterns across the massif's eastern and western flanks, creates multiple distinct ecological zones within a relatively compact area, supporting exceptional biodiversity with numerous endemic species.
