Borkener See

Borkener See is a lake in the Schwalm-Eder district of northern Hesse, Germany, situated southwest of the town of Borken. It lies within the Schwalmaue, part of the broader Westhessische Senke (West Hessian Depression), a lowland corridor that shapes much of the regional hydrology and ecology. The lake originated as a residual pit left behind by lignite mining in the Borkener Braunkohlerevier. After extraction ended, it was gradually filled by layered spring water rising through the underlying Buntsandstein and transformed, through a deliberate reclamation process, into a protected nature reserve. Its slightly alkaline, nutrient-poor waters create conditions that are rare among larger lakes in Hesse. Today the entire lake and its catchment area are protected as a nature reserve, an EU Birds Directive site, and an FFH (Habitats Directive) area. The lake is recognized primarily as a significant resting and staging area for migratory birds, including waterfowl, waders, and terns, making it a focal point of ornithological interest in the region.
