Cajas National Park

Cajas National Park is a high-elevation protected area in the southern Ecuadorian Andes, situated about 33 kilometers northwest of the city of Cuenca in the province of Azuay. It covers an extensive páramo landscape of grasslands, cushion vegetation, and rugged ridges shaped by Quaternary glaciation, with more than a thousand water bodies including around 235 well-defined glacial lakes and numerous smaller wetlands. The park is the source of several important rivers that supply drinking water to Cuenca and feed the Paute hydroelectric complex, which provides electricity to much of Ecuador. It was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2002 and forms part of the Macizo del Cajas UNESCO Biosphere Reserve established in 2013. Ecologically, Cajas protects a representative sample of northern Andean páramo and northwestern Andean montane forest ecosystems, supporting endemic plants, native highland wildlife, and a rich migratory avifauna. Its combination of glacial lakes, humid grasslands, relict Polylepis woodlands, and Inca-era road remains makes it both an ecological stronghold and a cultural landscape.
