Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary

Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area off the coast of Southern California, surrounding the waters around the Northern Channel Islands. Administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the sanctuary covers roughly 1,470 square miles of ocean from the mean high tide line out to six nautical miles offshore, encircling Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara Islands. The sanctuary sits at the meeting point of cold and warm ocean currents, which fuels unusually high productivity and biodiversity for the region. It protects deep-water habitats, dense kelp forests, marine mammal breeding grounds, and important seabird nesting areas, while also safeguarding submerged cultural resources such as historic shipwrecks and prehistoric Chumash sites. Designated in 1980 partly in response to the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, the sanctuary balances strict ecological protection with continuing uses such as fishing, research, shipping, and recreation. A network of marine reserves within its waters adds an extra layer of habitat protection, making it one of the most studied and actively managed marine protected areas on the United States West Coast.
