Charleston Conservation Park

Charleston Conservation Park is a small protected area in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, lying within the locality of Charleston roughly 32 kilometres east of Adelaide and a few kilometres north of Lobethal. Established on 8 April 1976 under the state's National Parks and Wildlife Act, the park covers about 54 hectares and is managed by the Department for Environment and Water. The park's significance lies in preserving a relatively undisturbed example of one of South Australia's most interesting ecological transitions. It sits where the wetter stringybark forests of the western Mount Lofty Ranges meet the drier mallee woodlands that characterise the eastern side of the range. Because the land has never been grazed, it retains a near-pristine condition that is unusual for a reserve of its size and proximity to settled farmland. Although compact, Charleston Conservation Park supports an impressive diversity of plant communities and at least seventy-six recorded bird species, making it a noteworthy pocket reserve for habitat representation and birdwatching within the densely populated Adelaide Hills region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
