Cisna-Wetlina Landscape Park

The Cisna-Wetlina Landscape Park is a large protected landscape area in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship of southeastern Poland, occupying the western part of the Western Bieszczady mountain range. It functions as the western buffer zone for the Bieszczady National Park and forms, together with that national park and the San River Valley Landscape Park, the Polish component of the International Biosphere Reserve 'Eastern Carpathians.' Across the state border to the south, the park continues ecologically into the Slovak Protected Landscape Area of the Eastern Carpathians and Poloniny National Park, creating a transboundary Carpathian conservation corridor. The park covers roughly 51,000 hectares of heavily forested mountain terrain, about 83 percent of which is wooded. Its peaks approach nearly 1,200 meters in elevation and display a classic layered pattern of mountain vegetation, from foothill forests through montane coniferous belts up to subalpine zones. Seven nature reserves within the park preserve exceptional yew stands, old-growth alder forests, river gorges, scree slopes, and examples of the region's unusual abiotic landforms. The park's ecological importance is closely tied to its role as a refuge for the Carpathian large-carnivore complex. Brown bears, wolves, Eurasian lynx, and the elusive European wildcat all persist in the forested valleys and ridges of this part of the Bieszczady, making the park one of the most important strongholds in Poland for these species.
