Cox Scrub Conservation Park

Cox Scrub Conservation Park is a small protected area in South Australia, located about 55 kilometres south of Adelaide in the gazetted localities of Ashbourne and Nangkita, near the town of Mount Compass. It lies within the Mount Lofty Ranges and protects an uncommon vegetation community dominated by low open Eucalyptus forest over banksia scrub and heath. The park covers just over five square kilometres of undulating sands overlying ironstone, and is considered a minimally disturbed remnant of a habitat type that has become rare across its region. Its birdlife, including threatened and range-limited species, has been an important part of its conservation profile since it was first set aside. Originally proclaimed in 1970 as Cox's Scrub National Park, it was reconstituted as a conservation park in 1972 and is today managed as an IUCN Category III protected area. The park's history is closely tied to a private owner who maintained the land in a natural state for beekeeping before selling it to the state.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
