Curlew National Grassland

Curlew National Grassland is a federally protected grassland in southeastern Idaho, covering portions of Oneida and Power counties. It sits within the broader Intermountain sagebrush steppe of the northern Great Basin and the upper Snake River Plain transition zone, an area historically shaped by grazing pressure, dryland farming, and erosion in the early twentieth century. The grassland was assembled from land purchased between 1934 and 1942, during the same era in which the U.S. government acquired degraded or abandoned farmland across the West for restoration and regrassing. Its purpose was to rehabilitate soil and vegetation on land that had been damaged by intensive dryland agriculture and overgrazing, and to stabilize the landscape against further wind and water erosion. Today it functions as a working example of mid-twentieth-century land rehabilitation combined with modern multiple-use management of sagebrush habitat. Curlew National Grassland is notable as one of the smaller National Grasslands in the western United States, valued less for spectacular scenery than for its quiet, expansive sagebrush character and its role as habitat for sagebrush-dependent wildlife in a region where such habitat has declined significantly.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
