A small Łódzkie floristic reserve protecting one of Poland's rare royal fern strongholds.

Długosz Królewski w Węglewicach

Długosz Królewski w Węglewicach is a small floristic nature reserve in central Poland, situated in the village of Węglewice within Gmina Galewice in Wieruszowski County, Łódzkie Voivodeship. Covering about 3.26 hectares within the Kotlina Grabowska mesoregion, the reserve was established in 1965 with the explicit purpose of preserving, for scientific and educational reasons, the natural habitat of the royal fern (Osmunda regalis). The reserve is meaningful because it safeguards one of the few remaining Polish populations of this imposing fern species, with individual specimens reaching up to two meters tall. It is the only protected site of its kind in the surrounding region and one of very few reserves in Poland dedicated specifically to royal fern conservation, giving it a focused and unusual character among Polish protected areas. Although small in size, the reserve reflects a broader pattern of Polish habitat protection in which dedicated reserves are created around single characteristic species. The site also contains a mosaic of four distinct plant communities, ranging from fresh suboceanic pine forest to sphagnum alder swamp, illustrating how the wet, acidic conditions required by the royal fern have shaped the surrounding vegetation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
