El Cardón Natural Park and Integrated Management Natural Area

El Cardón Natural Park and Integrated Management Natural Area is a protected area in southern Bolivia, located in the department of Tarija, about 72 kilometers from the city of Tarija. It spans about 30,000 hectares across the municipalities of El Puente and Yunchará, in the provinces of Méndez and José María Avilés, and sits within the high-altitude puna and pre-puna landscapes of the Bolivian Andes. The park is most celebrated for its remarkable cactus diversity. Around fifteen species of cacti thrive in the area, some of them endemic, growing at elevations between roughly 3,100 and 4,300 meters above sea level. This richness has earned the area recognition as the second largest cactus reserve in Latin America. Beyond its botanical importance, El Cardón functions as a buffer zone for the nearby Cordillera de Sama Biological Reserve and provides habitat for wild vicuñas and other high-Andean wildlife. The protected area also has a strong community dimension, with about two hundred families living in its surrounding villages and a growing emphasis on community-based ecotourism, traditional cactus-wood crafts, and the preservation of pre-Columbian archaeological sites scattered across the landscape.
