A small regional wetland reserve in central France shaped by an abandoned motorway quarry and reborn as a bird sanctuary.

Espace naturel sensible de la Vauvre

L'Espace naturel sensible de la Vauvre is a small protected natural area in the commune of Nassigny, in the Allier department of central France. Set in the historical region of Auvergne, it lies along the Cher valley close to the Tronçais forest, where an old motorway construction site has been transformed into a mosaic of ponds, reedbeds, and surrounding meadows. The site functions today as a regional nature reserve, a departmental "Espace Naturel Sensible" label, and a locally managed wildlife refuge managed primarily for birds and wetland biodiversity. Although it covers only around 46 hectares, the reserve plays an important ecological role as a resting and feeding area for migratory, wintering, and breeding birds in the middle of an otherwise heavily modified agricultural landscape. Its combination of open water, marshes, and adjacent meadows draws species ranging from kingfishers and ospreys to herons and red-backed shrikes, while nearby mammals such as beavers and otters have also reappeared along the Cher. The site's identity is closely tied to its unusual origin: the main body of water was created by sand and gravel extraction during the construction of the A71 motorway in the late 1980s. What began as an industrial by-product has, through several decades of restoration, become one of the most visible wetland conservation sites in the Allier department and a stopover for nature-based tourism in the Val de Cher area.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
