Fish Creek Mountains Wilderness

Fish Creek Mountains Wilderness is a protected wilderness area in Imperial County, California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It lies in the Colorado Desert region of southeastern California, southeast of the Vallecito Mountains and roughly 25 miles west of Brawley. The wilderness occupies part of the Fish Creek Mountains, a range that resembles a broad plateau rising dramatically from the surrounding desert basin. Its terrain features jagged ridges, twisting canyons, small valleys, and limestone outcrops that shape the area's distinctive erosional landforms. A portion of the ancient shoreline of Lake Cahuilla is preserved within the wilderness, connecting the landscape to the long natural history of the Imperial and Coachella Valleys. Designated as wilderness in 1994 and classified under IUCN Category Ib, Fish Creek Mountains Wilderness protects a relatively undisturbed desert environment that contrasts with the intensely managed agricultural lands of the nearby Imperial Valley. Its remoteness and rugged interior make it one of the lesser-known but visually striking protected landscapes in the southern California desert system.
