Five Islands Nature Reserve

Five Islands Nature Reserve is a compact protected area in the Tasman Sea, lying just off the Illawarra coast of New South Wales, Australia. It comprises five small continental islands situated between about half a kilometre and three and a half kilometres east of Port Kembla, with the largest landmass, Big Island, reaching only 16 metres in elevation. The reserve is administered as an IUCN Category IV habitat and species management area by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, and it covers roughly 26 hectares of land surrounded by coastal waters. The islands are notable for their seabird breeding colonies, including little penguins, shearwaters and storm petrels, as well as for their geological connection to the ancient mainland. Today they remain a focal point for seabird research and a small but important refuge for native vegetation and reptiles among the heavily modified coastal landscape of the Illawarra. The reserve combines ecological, geological and cultural values, with strong ties to the region's Aboriginal heritage and a long history of pastoral and extractive use before formal protection in 1960. Its accessibility from the industrial port city of Port Kembla gives it an unusual character as a wildlife refuge set against a heavily urbanised stretch of the New South Wales south coast.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
