Franzosenwiesen/Rotes Wasser

Franzosenwiesen/Rotes Wasser is a designated nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the state of Hesse in central-western Germany, located in the district of Marburg-Biedenkopf. The reserve lies on the territory of the towns of Rauschenberg and Wetter, southwest of the small town of Rosenthal and north and northwest of the Rauschenberg district of Bracht. The protected area follows the course of the small stream known as the Rotes Wasser, a tributary of the Ohm river, giving the site its dual name. The reserve is characterized by open wet meadow landscapes and the corridor of the Rotes Wasser brook, set within the broader Burgwald region. Much of the area overlaps with the larger FFH (Flora-Fauna-Habitat) site also called Franzosenwiesen und Rotes Wasser, which extends the protected corridor downstream toward Schönstadt. Together, the designation protects a compact but ecologically valuable stretch of lowland stream and meadow habitat in an otherwise agricultural part of Hesse.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
