Gifford Marine Park

Gifford Marine Park is a large Australian offshore marine protected area located roughly 700 kilometres east of Brisbane, in the deep waters of the Tasman Sea. It forms part of the broader Temperate East Marine Park Network and covers several thousand square kilometres of ocean around a pair of isolated, flat-topped seamounts that rise from the seafloor along the Lord Howe Seamount Chain. These underwater mountains, known as guyots, represent the defining geological feature of the park. Their summits and flanks create unusual depth, current, and habitat conditions in an otherwise deep oceanic environment, and they are believed to play a role in the movement and behaviour of large marine species, including whales that use the area for feeding, resting, breeding, and navigation. Although the park is situated far from the Australian mainland and has no land surface, it holds ecological importance as one of the more distinctive seamount-based reserves in Australia's offshore marine estate, with conservation protections focused on maintaining the integrity of its seafloor and pelagic habitats.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
