Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is South Africa's Free State's only national park, situated in the eastern highveld region near the Lesotho border. The park covers 340 square kilometers of spectacular mountainous terrain in the Rooiberge foothills of the Maluti Mountains. Its defining feature is the golden, ochre, and orange-hued deeply eroded sandstone cliffs and outcrops, particularly the iconic Brandwag rock formation, which gives the park its name. The area is internationally significant for its geological and paleontological importance, with the sandstone formations representing the upper part of the Karoo Supergroup and containing the world's oldest known dinosaur embryos discovered in 1978. Beyond its geological wonders, the park preserves rich highveld and montane grassland ecosystems with over 60 grass species, Afromontane forests, and more than 210 bird species including endangered Cape vulture and bearded vulture populations.
