Grand Mesa National Forest

Grand Mesa National Forest is a large U.S. National Forest in western Colorado, spanning Mesa, Delta, and Garfield counties and covering most of the iconic Grand Mesa along with the southern portion of Battlement Mesa. It adjoins the White River National Forest to the north and the Gunnison National Forest to the east, and together with the Gunnison and Uncompahgre National Forests is administered from offices in Delta, Colorado. The forest is best understood through its defining geography: an expansive elevated tableland that rises abruptly above the surrounding valleys and canyons of the Colorado Western Slope. Grand Mesa itself is widely recognized as the largest flat-top mountain in the world, a basalt-capped plateau carved into a striking step above nearby towns such as Grand Junction and Cedaredge. Protected under U.S. national forest status since the late nineteenth century, the area combines high-country forests, montane lakes and reservoirs, and wildlife habitat that ranges from montane communities to subalpine environments. As one of the oldest national forest units in the United States, established in 1892 as the Battlement Mesa Forest Reserve, the forest carries both ecological and historical significance. It is valued not only for the protected landscape itself but also for outdoor recreation, scenic drives across the mesa, winter sports at high elevation, and the wildlife-rich habitat it sustains in a region otherwise dominated by lower and drier terrain.
