Hale Conservation Park

Hale Conservation Park is a small protected area in South Australia, situated about 60 kilometres north-east of Adelaide and just south-east of the township of Williamstown. It lies in the rugged north-central part of the Mount Lofty Ranges within the Hundred of Barossa, a region better known for vineyards than for conservation reserves. The park occupies only a few square kilometres of hilly terrain, yet contains a distinctive combination of forest, heath, native wildlife, and unusually significant geology. The conservation park protects a low open forest dominated by several species of eucalypt above a mid-dense heath understorey, an unusually intact representation of the vegetation that once covered much of this part of the ranges. It also shelters native mammals such as the western grey kangaroo and echidna, over sixty recorded bird species, and a small but ecologically important population of the threatened scaly thrush. Beyond its ecological value, the park is recognised for a remarkable geological unconformity between Adelaide Basin sediments and an underlying crystalline basement inlier, a feature it shares with the neighbouring Warren Conservation Park. Although modest in size, Hale Conservation Park provides an unusually concentrated snapshot of the natural and geological heritage of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Its rugged hills, native forest remnants, and scientifically important rock exposures make it a meaningful stop for ecologists, birdwatchers, and geologists interested in the lesser-known protected places of South Australia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
