Heselgraben

Heselgraben is a small protected landscape located in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It spans two administrative districts, Freudenstadt and Rottweil, and covers territory within the municipalities of Empfingen and Sulz am Neckar. The area sits on the geological transition between Muschelkalk limestone and Keuper formations within the natural region known as the Obere Gäue. The landscape is defined by a fine-grained mosaic of small land-use patches rather than a single dominant habitat type. Hedges, field coppices, semi-dry grasslands, wet meadows, and ponds together create a richly structured traditional countryside. To the north, the Empfinger Stauweiher pond adds an aquatic element, while the Empfinger Bach stream runs through the area. The southern portion of the protected area is also part of the Natura 2000 FFH site "Wiesen und Heiden an Glatt und Mühlbach," linking its protection to broader European ecological networks. As a designated protected landscape under German conservation law, Heselgraben represents the agricultural, ecological, and aesthetic value of a traditional working landscape that still supports a notable diversity of species and habitats. Its modest size is offset by its high structural variety and its role within a wider regional system of landscape protection areas in the Freudenstadt and Rottweil districts.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
