Hummingbird Springs Wilderness

Hummingbird Springs Wilderness is a Bureau of Land Management wilderness area protecting roughly 31,200 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape in northwestern Maricopa County, Arizona. The wilderness sits at the northwestern end of the Belmont Mountains, adjoining the Big Horn Mountains Wilderness and overlooking the smaller Tonopah Desert plains. Its terrain combines arid mountain ridges with broad desert washes, including the upper reaches of washes that ultimately feed into the Gila River system. The area was designated in 1990 and remains a relatively quiet, roadless expanse of classic central Arizona desert country. The defining feature of the wilderness is its blend of low mountains, rocky slopes, sand, and drainage corridors within the broader lower Sonoran Desert region. Sugarloaf Mountain is the highest point, reaching about 3,418 feet and serving as the highest elevation of both the wilderness and the Belmont Mountains. The region is remote, dry, and sparsely settled, with Tonopah and Aguila serving as the nearest small gateway communities. Hummingbird Springs Wilderness is most appreciated for its sense of solitude and intact desert character rather than for any single landmark. Together with the neighboring Big Horn Mountains Wilderness, it forms an important block of protected Sonoran Desert habitat in a region otherwise characterized by open desert plains, mining heritage, and working rangeland.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
