Ingalba, Big Bush and Pucawan Nature Reserves

Ingalba, Big Bush and Pucawan Nature Reserves are three strict nature reserves located to the west of Temora in the agricultural heartland of southern inland New South Wales. Together they protect roughly forty-nine square kilometres of flat to gently undulating country set within the broader Temora Shire, and represent one of the most important surviving remnants of the mugga ironbark and western grey box woodland that once stretched across this part of the Riverina and southwest slopes. The reserves sit on the geological foundations of the Lachlan Fold Belt, where sedimentary, volcanic and igneous rocks create subtly varied terrain that supports two main vegetation communities: tall open woodland and a drier low open woodland with heath understorey. Beyond their botanical value, the reserves are ecologically important because they provide habitat for threatened woodland birds, native mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and because they are linked across an otherwise heavily cleared agricultural landscape by corridors of surviving native vegetation and Travelling Stock Routes. Managed as a single conservation complex by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the three reserves are classed as IUCN Category Ia strict nature reserves. Their significance lies as much in what they represent historically as in their current biodiversity: a living example of an inland woodland system that has been extensively cleared and logged elsewhere in the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
