Karlamilyi National Park

Karlamilyi National Park is the largest national park in Western Australia, covering a vast expanse of desert wilderness in the Pilbara region of northern Australia. The park lies approximately 250 kilometres northeast of Newman and 1,250 kilometres north-northeast of Perth, protecting a spectacular landscape that straddles the boundary between the Little Sandy Desert and the Great Sandy Desert. This remote protected area encompasses an entire landscape sequence including extensive dune fields, tabletop uplands, a complete river and creek system, alluvial formations, saline lakes, and ancient palaeodrainage lines. The park's significance extends beyond its ecological diversity to include profound cultural importance as it lies within the traditional Country of the Martu people, who have maintained continuous connection to this desert landscape for tens of thousands of years. The park contains two Aboriginal communities, Parnngurr and Punmu, which represent ongoing indigenous presence and stewardship of this extraordinary desert environment.
