Lake Kutubu

Lake Kutubu is the second-largest lake in Papua New Guinea and, at roughly 800 meters above sea level, the country's largest upland body of water. Set in a depression within the rugged interior mountains of Southern Highlands Province, the lake drains eastward through the Soro River into the Kikori River system. Its clear waters, fed largely by underground sources and mountain streams, support one of the most biologically distinctive freshwater ecosystems in the New Guinea-Australia region. The lake is internationally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, including a remarkable concentration of endemic fish species found nowhere else on Earth. Together with Lake Sentani, it forms an ecoregion identified by WWF's Global 200 list of priority conservation areas. Beyond its ecological value, Lake Kutubu carries strong cultural significance for the Foe and Fasu communities who inhabit its catchment, and it has become a focal point in debates balancing resource development with environmental protection in the Papua New Guinea highlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
