Mount Charleston Wilderness

The Mount Charleston Wilderness Area is a protected wilderness in southern Nevada, sitting in the Spring Mountains Range just west of Las Vegas. Designated by the U.S. Congress in 1989 under the Wilderness Act of 1964, the area covers tens of thousands of acres of rugged mountain terrain and protects one of the most important high-elevation ecosystems in the Mojave region. The wilderness rises above the surrounding desert basin to the forested slopes and ridges of the Spring Mountains, where Mount Charleston itself, also known as Charleston Peak, is the highest point in the range. The area is most celebrated for its extensive stands of ancient bristlecone pines, representing the largest concentration of these long-lived trees in the U.S. Intermountain Region. Beyond its botanical treasures, the wilderness provides habitat for Rocky Mountain elk and rare species such as Palmer's chipmunk, and it functions as a critical natural contrast to the urbanized Las Vegas Valley nearby. It is a flagship protected landscape for biodiversity, recreation, and watershed protection in Clark County.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
