Map protected geography across two contrasting Great Plains districts

Compare protected landscapes around Nebraska National Forest across the Sandhills and Pine Ridge

Nebraska National Forest spans two sharply different Great Plains settings: the hand-planted Bessey forest rising from grass-stabilized Sandhills dunes, and native ponderosa pine covering Pine Ridge escarpments, broken ridges, canyons, and buttes. The nearby map reveals surrounding protected places while keeping their forest origins, designations, and landform histories independent.

Nebraska National Forest

Nebraska National Forest is a United States national forest in western Nebraska, managed by the U.S. Forest Service and headquartered operationally out of Chadron. Spanning more than 140,000 acres across Thomas, Dawes, Blaine, and Sioux counties, the forest is unusual because it is really two very different landscapes stitched into one administrative unit: a large hand-planted forest in the central Sandhills and a tract of native ponderosa pine in the Pine Ridge along the northwestern edge of the state. The Bessey Ranger District, near Halsey in the Sandhills, was created as an early 20th-century experiment to see whether trees could be reestablished in the treeless Great Plains. The Pine Ridge Ranger District, in the northwest near Chadron, protects native coniferous forest and rugged canyon country. Together the two districts represent the surprising range of forested landscapes that Nebraska has to offer, from agricultural-plains plantation to High Plains pine woodland. The forest is ecologically important both as a man-made habitat island in the central plains and as a guardian of one of the country's easternmost extensions of ponderosa pine woodland. It is also paired under the same supervisor's office with surrounding national grasslands and a neighboring national forest, creating a large, scattered protected landscape that arcs across central and western Nebraska into southwestern South Dakota.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
