Nylsvley Nature Reserve

Nylsvley Nature Reserve is a protected area of roughly 40 km2 set within the seasonally inundated floodplain of the Nyl River in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The reserve sits in the upper catchment of this very shallow-gradient river, the headwater section of the Mogalakwena, and protects an extensive system of reedbeds, floodplain grasslands, and surrounding open woodland. Declared a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 1998, it is one of the most significant bird habitats in the interior of South Africa, with more than 370 recorded bird species and enormous seasonal concentrations of waterfowl during peak floods. The reserve is notable not only for its birdlife but also for its unusual plant communities. It contains the only known stands of wild rice (Oryza longistaminata) in South Africa, a finding that reflects the unique hydrology of the floodplain. Larger mammal life includes roan antelope and tsessebe, both characteristic species of the broader bushveld region. Together, these qualities make Nylsvley an important inland wetland system that blends floodplain ecology with surrounding savanna woodland. While the reserve is small in area, its ecological concentration is high, and it represents a key reference point for floodplain and wetland conservation in South Africa's northern interior.
