Oberes Neckartal

Oberes Neckartal is a designated landscape protection area located in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It covers a stretch of the Neckar river valley above the town of Horb am Neckar, including the Hängetal and Langental side valleys, within the Landkreis Freudenstadt. The protected landscape belongs to the natural region of the Obere Gäue and lies entirely within the Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord, anchoring a broader network of conservation areas along the upper Neckar. The valley combines a farmed valley floor with heavily wooded slopes, creating a distinctive transition between cultivated grassland and steep riverside forest. The Neckar itself, combined with the passing Plochingen to Immendingen railway line and a regional road, gives the area both scenic and infrastructural character. Protection has been layered over decades, with parts of the area under landscape protection since 1938 and additional ecological value recognized through overlap with the Horber Neckarhänge FFH site. The landscape protection area was formally designated on 25 October 2001 through a regulation issued by the Landratsamt Freudenstadt, consolidating older protective designations into a single modern framework. It functions as a connecting piece in a wider mosaic of landscape, nature, and Natura 2000 areas across the Freudenstadt district, extending protection along one of Baden-Württemberg's most characteristic river valleys.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
