Compare protected geography around a narrow reed-fringed lake

Position Ove Sø within North Jutland's wider lake and wetland protected geography

Ove Sø stretches as a long, shallow freshwater body through the open glacial landscape of Thy, bordered by reed-lined shore, meadow and pasture, quiet bays, Madstedborg island, the Tegå and Hørsted Å inflows, and a western outlet toward Limfjorden. Explore nearby North Jutland protected geography while keeping every catchment, designation, and wetland habitat independent.

A long, shallow Danish lake in Thy, once the sole Danish refuge of the otter.

Ove Sø

Ove Sø is a narrow, shallow lake in the Thy region of northern Jutland, Denmark. Stretching roughly 8 kilometers in length, it lies north of the village of Bedsted and southwest of Thisted, within Thisted Kommune in Region Nordjylland. The lake is a defining freshwater feature of the local landscape and is closely tied to the surrounding wetland system through which it drains westward toward the Limfjorden. The lake is shallow throughout, with a maximum depth of around 2.5 meters, and supports a mix of open water, reed-fringed margins, and adjacent meadows. Near the middle of the lake lies a small island known as Madstedborg, which preserves remnants of an old fortified enclosure (voldsted). Ove Sø is fed by Tegå from the north and Hørsted Å from the south, and its outflow runs via Hvidbjerg Å through Ørum Sø into Krik Vig on the western Limfjorden. Ecologically, Ove Sø forms part of a designated Natura 2000 site covering Hvidbjerg Å, Ove Sø, and Ørum Sø, recognized as both a habitat protection area and a bird protection area. It gained particular significance as an important refuge for the Eurasian otter, at one point serving as the species' only remaining Danish habitat, and it continues to function as a stopover for migratory waterfowl such as whooper swans and bean geese.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
