The protected area was formally established in 2003, with the broader 29-hectare extension including the wooded heights north of the road that amphibians use as winter habitat.

Around the same time, the Landesstraße that crosses the migration corridor was fitted with a roughly 110-metre amphibian protection fence, with buried collection buckets, to reduce road mortality.
