The Reserva de la Biosfera de los Ancares Leoneses is a protected biosphere reserve in the northwestern part of León province, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, Spain. It encompasses a series of mountain valleys in the Sierra de Ancares within the comarca of El Bierzo, declared by UNESCO in 2006 under its Man and the Biosphere programme. The reserve covers a large mountainous territory built around the valleys of the Cúa, Ancares, and Burbia rivers, including parts of the municipalities of Valle de Ancares, Vega de Espinareda, Villafranca del Bierzo, and Peranzares. It is recognized for its combination of natural, cultural, industrial, and intangible heritage, reflecting the historical and environmental legacy of a long-inhabited mountain landscape. Beyond its ecological value, the biosphere reserve stands out for the active involvement of local communities in conservation, with its management structure bringing together municipal councils and the Consejo Comarcal del Bierzo to preserve traditional resources and the region's rural character.
