Los Ancares Lucenses Biosphere Reserve

Los Ancares Lucentes Biosphere Reserve is a large protected area in the eastern part of Lugo province, in Galicia, northwestern Spain. Designated by UNESCO in 2006, it extends across the municipalities of Cervantes, Navia de Suarna, and Becerreá, covering part of the Sierra de Ancares and the surrounding mountain ranges that give this part of Galicia its distinctive highland character. The reserve lies in a transitional landscape of Atlantic climate and mid- to high-mountain terrain, where the Eurosiberian and Mediterranean biogeographic regions meet. This convergence produces a remarkable mix of plant and animal species, allowing typically northern species to occur alongside more Mediterranean elements within the same valleys and slopes. Beyond its biodiversity value, the area is shaped by deep river valleys, traditional rural land use, and a cultural landscape that supports rare wildlife such as the brown bear and the endangered capercaillie. Its combination of ecological richness, mountainous scenery, and traditional Galician mountain communities makes it one of the most distinctive protected areas in northwestern Spain.
