Rietberger Emsniederung mit Steinhorster Becken

Rietberger Emsniederung mit Steinhorster Becken is a European Bird Protection Area (SPA) situated in the eastern part of the Münsterland region, in the border zone between the Gütersloh and Paderborn districts of North Rhine-Westphalia. It comprises a large, groundwater-influenced lowland stretch of the upper Ems river around Rietberg, extending roughly from the Kaunitz area of Verl in the northeast down to the town of Rietberg in the southwest, including the Steinhorster Becken basin. The landscape is defined by wet meadows, formerly drained grasslands, reed beds, marshes, oxbow-style water bodies, small woodlands, and pockets of arable land, all interwoven around the meandering course of the Ems and its floodplain. The mosaic of habitats supports an exceptionally rich bird community for an inland German site, with roles as breeding ground, stopover for migratory species, and wintering habitat all overlapping within the area. The site is officially described as one of the most significant breeding, resting, migration, and wintering areas in North Rhine-Westphalia. Designated in 2000 and administered by the Regierungspräsidium Detmold, it contributes to the Natura 2000 network and reflects the broader European Union Birds Directive aim of conserving wild bird species and their habitats.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
