Rio Negro-Sopladora National Park

Río Negro-Sopladora National Park is a high-elevation protected area in the southern Ecuadorian Andes, spanning the provinces of Azuay and Morona Santiago. The park safeguards a large, largely intact mosaic of Andean páramo grasslands and montane forests that together form one of the more biologically rich highland landscapes in the country. Created in 2018, the park became the 55th area incorporated into Ecuador's National System of Protected Areas (SNAP). It functions as a critical biological corridor linking adjacent reserves, especially within the Sangay-Podocarpus conservation corridor and the larger Cóndor Kutukú-Palanda connectivity framework that is central to Andean-Amazonian connectivity in the region. The park is defined by its combination of nearly pristine páramo wetlands, evergreen montane forests, and steep elevational gradients. These conditions support a substantial concentration of endemic plants, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, including several threatened and range-restricted species.
