Rockpile Mountain Wilderness

Rockpile Mountain Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area in the southeastern Ozarks of Missouri, set within the larger Mark Twain National Forest. It occupies a broken, rocky ridge that runs between Little Grass Mountain in the north and the national forest boundary several miles to the south, in Madison County southeast of Bell Mountain and southwest of Fredericktown. The wilderness is named for an ancient ring of granite stones that sits atop the mountain. Most likely the work of earlier Indigenous peoples, the rock pile has long been interpreted as a traditional cairn and gives the area both its name and its strongest sense of place. The slopes that drop away from the ridge are steep and rocky, shaped by the erosional character typical of the eastern Ozark highlands. Because of its compact size and rugged terrain, Rockpile Mountain Wilderness represents a quiet, low-visibility corner of Missouri's national forest system. It preserves an unroaded expanse of Ozark terrain that contrasts with the more heavily visited parts of the surrounding Mark Twain National Forest and offers a sense of isolation typical of small wilderness tracts in the region.
