A forested ridge park in southeastern Poland, protecting mixed Western and Eastern European tree species.
Roztocze National Park
Roztocze National Park lies in southeastern Poland, in the Lublin Voivodeship, on the Roztocze ridge that forms a transition between the Polish lowlands and the Carpathians. It is one of the most forested national parks in the country, with woodlands covering the overwhelming majority of its territory and a small complement of wetlands, river valleys, and beech-fir forests. The park was established in 1974 from earlier forest and floristic reserves that had been created on land historically part of the Zamoyski estate. Its name derives from the Roztocze region, a long upland belt that crosses the Polish-Ukrainian border and is known for its geological history, mixed Central European flora, and traditional ties to Polish forestry. The park's symbol is the Polish konik horse, a semi-wild breed whose breeding program has become one of its most recognizable features. Today the park protects a remarkably complete cross-section of woodland types characteristic of western and eastern Europe meeting on a single ridge. Among its features are Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary substrates, river valleys, peat bogs with glacial relicts, and a constellation of strictly protected reserves that together preserve one of the most distinctive forest ecosystems in lowland Poland.
