Norwegian alpine wilderness with Scandinavia's second-largest glacier and Sami cultural heritage

Saltfjellet, Svartisen National Park

Saltfjellet–Svartisen National Park is a vast protected wilderness area in Nordland county, northern Norway, encompassing over 2,100 square kilometres of diverse mountain and valley landscapes. The park spans a pronounced west-east gradient, transitioning from the rocky shores of the Nordfjorden coast through high alpine plateaux down to birch-covered valleys and open tundra. At its southwestern corner lies Svartisen, Scandinavia's second-largest glacier covering approximately 370 square kilometres, a dramatic ice mass that feeds a network of meltwater rivers and lakes throughout the region. The park's underlying calcareous bedrock creates conditions for a remarkably rich flora, including several regionally rare plant species not found elsewhere in Norway. The park forms the centrepiece of a larger protected area of about 2,839 square kilometres that includes adjacent landscape protection areas and nature reserves.
