Stemmbruch

Stemmbruch is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the municipality of Stelle in the district of Harburg, Lower Saxony, in northern Germany. Covering roughly 56 hectares, it protects a hanging spring bog (Hangquellmoor) sitting on a sandy geest ridge that drops down toward the Seeve river floodplain. The reserve is fully enclosed by the landscape protection area known as Buchwedel und Umgebung, giving it an additional buffer of protected surroundings. The site has been protected since October 17, 1989, and is managed by the responsible lower nature conservation authority of the Harburg district, with technical oversight from the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection, and Nature Conservation (NLWKN). Its location between a major freight rail corridor and the A 39 motorway makes it a compact pocket of bog vegetation pressed into a heavily developed transport landscape. Ecologically, Stemmbruch is valued for its mix of bog pools, moor heath, and birch and alder swamp woodland, a habitat mosaic typical of small lowland bogs in the North German plain. Drainage from the reserve flows via the Kohlenbach into the Ashauser Mühlenbach, a tributary of the Seeve, tying the site hydrologically into the broader Seeve lowland system.

Examine past earthquake observations in the wider Stemmbruch area

Stemmbruch’s catalogue associates reported epicentres with the Lower Saxon reserve by calculated distance, not through the sandy geest ridge, Seeve floodplain edge, bog, or moor heath. Each source-linked record supplies a date, magnitude, depth, locality, and reserve distance for historical comparison without attributing habitat effects, present danger, or prediction.
