Tatra National Park

Tatra National Park is the only alpine-style mountain range in Poland, protecting the Polish portion of the Tatra Mountains along the country's southern border with Slovakia. Established in 1954 and formally opened in 1955, the park covers roughly 211 square kilometers of rugged peaks, deep glacial valleys, cirque lakes, and forested slopes that rise from below 800 meters to nearly 2,500 meters at the summit of Rysy. The park is renowned for its distinct vertical zonation, from lower montane beech and spruce forests through subalpine dwarf pine (mugo pine) to alpine meadows and bare summits. This layered environment supports a remarkable concentration of alpine species found nowhere else in Poland, including the Tatra chamois, the Tatra marmot, and around 200 vascular plant species whose entire Polish range lies within the Tatra. Tatra National Park forms a continuous protected area with the Slovak Tatra National Park (TANAP) across the border, together designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The combined Polish and Slovak unit safeguards biodiversity across a transboundary high-mountain ecosystem of roughly 100,000 hectares, making the Tatra one of Central Europe's most significant mountain protected areas.
