Tenggol Island

Tenggol Island is a small tropical island lying in the South China Sea roughly 24 kilometers off the coast of Terengganu, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It forms the southernmost island in a chain that also includes the more widely known Perhentian and Redang islands, and together with two tiny nearby islets it makes up the Tenggol Islands group. The island is protected by a forested interior rising to a high point of 272 meters, ringed by fringing reefs, rocky shoals, and small sandy bays that have given it a reputation as one of the quieter scuba destinations on the east coast. For most of its history Tenggol was uninhabited, used only occasionally by fishers and travelers. After the Vietnam War it briefly gained a more somber place in local memory when Vietnamese boat people were stranded on its shores. Today the island is known mainly as a low-key resort and diving destination, with a small number of beach chalets tucked against tropical forest rather than large-scale development. Its appeal lies less in nightlife and crowds than in clear water, varied dive sites, shipwrecks, and seasonal encounters with marine life, including turtles and, in certain years, whale sharks. The island belongs administratively to the state of Terengganu and the Dungun district, with mainland access via the jetty at Kuala Dungun. Because it sits exposed on the eastern seaboard, the monsoon strongly shapes when and how the island can be visited, and much of its tourism rhythm revolves around that seasonal cycle.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
