Tso Kar

Tso Kar is a high-altitude fluctuating salt lake situated on the Rupshu Plateau in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India. The name Tso Kar refers to the white salt efflorescence that forms around the margins of the lake as its saline waters evaporate, a signature feature of this otherwise stark Trans-Himalayan landscape. The lake forms part of a broader wetland complex together with the smaller freshwater Startsapuk Tso to its south. Together these two water bodies and the surrounding More Plains constitute one of the most ecologically important high-altitude wetland systems in India. The complex was designated as India's 42nd Ramsar Site in 2020, recognizing its outstanding value for migratory waterbirds, breeding cranes, and the wider Trans-Himalayan ecosystem. Beyond its ecological significance, Tso Kar sits within the cultural landscape of the Changpa nomads, who have historically harvested salt from the lake and grazed livestock across the surrounding steppe. The basin's combination of saline lake, freshwater lagoon, alpine peaks, and steppe plains makes it a defining landscape of the southern Ladakh plateau.
