Undara Volcanic National Park

Undara Volcanic National Park is a protected area in the Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia, situated approximately 275 kilometers southwest of Cairns and 58 kilometers by road from the small town of Mount Surprise. The park covers roughly 615 square kilometers of terrain within the McBride Basalt (Volcanic) Province, one of eleven discontinuous Cenozoic volcanic regions in north Queensland. The park's defining feature is Australia's longest lava tube system, formed during a massive volcanic eruption approximately 190,000 years ago when the Undara volcano expelled an estimated 23 billion cubic meters of lava onto the surrounding landscape, creating flows that extended approximately 160 kilometers. The landscape is characterized by dry savanna woodland interspersed with volcanic craters, cones, and collapse features, with the lava tubes themselves supporting unique vine thicket ecosystems that harbor species with strong Gondwana affinities. The park was officially declared in 2009 and holds particular significance as both a geological wonder and a biodiversity hotspot.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
