Vápenické jezero

Vápenické jezero is a small protected natural monument in the Příbram district of the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. The site centers on a shallow reservoir with a sandy bottom, set within the rolling landscape of the Benešov Hills near the village of Vápenice, east of Vysoký Chlumec. The area is recognized for its wetland character, fed largely by springs and connected to a broader historical system of ponds. Roughly two thirds of the water surface is covered by bulrush stands, creating sheltered habitat conditions for amphibians, aquatic plants, and waterbirds. The protected area overlaps with a European Site of Community Importance named after the same lake. Its ecological importance is tied especially to the presence of the fire-bellied toad, a strongly endangered amphibian in the Czech context. The site also shelters other rare flora, reptile species, and nesting or foraging birds associated with reed and wetland habitats.
