Wiesen bei Dreisel

Wiesen bei Dreisel is a small European protected area in the municipality of Windeck, within the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is registered as a Natura 2000 site under the EU Habitats Directive and overlaps almost entirely with the older German nature reserve known as Ehemalige Siegschleife bei Dreisel. The site protects a stretch of former Sieg river meander where species-rich wet meadows, moist tall herb communities, sedge beds, and reed stands have developed alongside nutrient-poor grassland on the slope of an Umlaufberg, an isolated hill carved out by the old river loop. The defining ecological value of the area lies in its population of two rare butterfly species, the Dusky Large Blue (Dunkler Wiesenknopf-Ameisenbläuling) and the Scarce Large Blue (Heller Wiesenknopf-Ameisenbläuling), both of which depend on Great Burnet as their sole larval food plant and on specific ant species for part of their life cycle. Although the protected area covers only about seventy-three hectares, its combination of floodplain grassland, slope meadow, and intact traditional vegetation makes it an important local refuge for meadow invertebrates and a representative example of how abandoned river channels evolve into valuable habitat for rare flora and fauna.
