Ancient Devonian reef gorge in the Kimberley

Windjana Gorge National Park

Windjana Gorge National Park protects a dramatic sandstone gorge in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia, roughly 355 kilometres east of Broome. The park encompasses a spectacular river-cut gorge carved through the ancient Napier Range, a geological formation representing part of a Devonian reef system that dates back over 375 million years. The Lennard River has eroded a winding canyon more than three kilometres long, with sheer walls reaching up to 30 metres in height and a width of approximately 100 metres. This landscape forms part of a broader geological corridor that includes nearby Tunnel Creek and Geikie Gorge, all sharing the same remarkable Devonian reef origins. The park is situated within the traditional lands of the Walmajarri people and is managed by Western Australia's Department of Environment and Conservation as an IUCN Category II protected area.
