Wolbecker Tiergarten

The Wolbecker Tiergarten is a nature and Habitats Directive protected area covering roughly 288 hectares within the larger Wolbeck state forest on the southeastern edge of Münster, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The reserve consists of near-natural deciduous woodland, dominated largely by beech on seasonally waterlogged soils, and is split into two parts by the Angel river. Its ecological value lies in its long continuity as woodland, its high volume of deadwood, and the resulting habitat for lichens, mosses, insects, amphibians, bats, and cavity-nesting birds. The forest was shaped into its present form in the eighteenth century as a princely hunting park and was declared a full nature reserve and EU Habitats Directive site in 2005, reflecting its importance for regional biodiversity conservation. Today the Wolbecker Tiergarten functions both as a protected ecological area and as a quiet recreational woodland close to the city, with a grid of forest paths, historic boundary features, and individual very old trees such as the several-hundred-year-old Donnereiche.
